During the Western Energy Crisis, CUB gets PGE and PacifiCorp to significantly increase their investments in energy efficiency including offering hundreds of thousands of compact fluorescent light bulbs to their customers.

2001 - CUB Reduces PGE Rate Hike By $4.5 Million

CUB stops PGE from adding $2.2 million in rates for corporate advertising.

2000 - Pacific Power Rate Hike Reduction

CUB wins agreement to reduce Pacific Power rate hike by $60 million.

2000 - CUB Wins $5.1 Million NW Natural Rate Reduction

CUB wins a reduction of $5.1 million from NW Natural’s rate case related to the costs of their new computer systems.

2000 - Trojan Profits Removed from Rates

CUB settles lawsuit with PGE after CUB leads efforts to place referendum on ballot to repeal law that retroactively allows for utilities to charge profits on retired power plants. That law was passed in response to CUB’s victory at the Oregon Court of Appeals which found that PGE is not allowed to keep collecting profits on the closed Trojan nuclear power plant. More than 1 million Oregon voters side with CUB on referendum.

1999 - CUB Stops US West Legislation, Holds Company Accountable to PUC Process

CUB stops US West from passing legislation that would have prevented the PUC from ordering US West to refund more than $300 million.

1999 - Fair and Clean Energy Plan Legislation Passed

CUB’s Fair and Clean Energy Plan passes the Oregon Legislature, establishing green power options for customers and increasing investment in energy efficiency.

1999 - Enron Deregulation Plan Halted

CUB stops Enron’s radical deregulation plan that would have sold off all of PGE’s generating assets, dismantled the utility and sold off Oregon’s hydro assets. Rates would have risen by $1 billion during the energy crisis of 2000-2001 if Enron’s plan had been adopted.

1998 - CUB Ends Subsidy of Industrial Electric Customers

CUB wins agreement that ends the practice of having residential customers subsidize energy costs incurred to serve industrial customers, saving electric ratepayers more than $40 million per year.

1997 - Enron Merger Concessions for Customers and Environment

CUB wins conditions on the PGE/Enron merger that guarantee $140 million in rate reductions, maintain service quality, and require Enron to invest in energy efficiency programs, renewable energy development, and programs to protect endangered salmon.

1997 - US West Price Hike Legislation Defeated

CUB stops US West’s legislation that was designed to significantly raise phone rates.

1996 - CUB Gains Largest Electric Rate Reduction in OR History

CUB gains largest electric rate reduction in Oregon history. PGE customers see their bills go down by more that $50 per year, on average.

1995 - CUB Cuts Idaho Power Rate Hike by 17 Percent

CUB forces Idaho Power to reduce its planned rate hike from 22% to 5%, saving thousands of East Oregonians more than $100 per year.

1994 - Trojan Plant Closure Rate Hike Reduced

CUB helps reduce the rate hike associated with closing the Trojan nuclear power plant by $73.90 per household.

1993 - OR Supreme Court Orders US West Customer Refund

The Oregon Supreme Court sides with CUB and orders US West to refund $15.5 million to customers.

1992 - Line Blocking Introduced to Protect Customer Privacy

After Caller ID is introduced, the Public Utility Commission adopts CUB’s position that phone companies must offer consumers a line blocking option to protect their privacy.

1992 - CUB Forces US West Refund After Finding of Improper Profit Diversion

CUB successfully forces US West to refund $56 million to customers, after the Public Utility Commission finds that the company has improperly used its publishing subsidiary to divert profits away from its phone system. The average refund is about $24 per household.

1992 - CUB Proves US West Overcharging

CUB issues report, Everything Ventured, Nothing Gained which shows that US West has used subsidiaries to overcharge ratepayers by nearly $100 million.
