You’re Invited to Join CUB for a Phone Briefing on Portland Water/Wastewater Issues!

If you have been following CUB’s blog over the past couple of months, you may be aware that I have been participating as a member of the Portland Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission, which was formed by the City Council in order to analyze options to improve oversight of the Portland Water Bureau and the Bureau of Environmental Services. The Commission has started developing recommendations on stronger oversight structures and procedures to make sure the City Council listens to the best possible ideas for effective management of these two bureaus.
As CUB’s Consumer Advocate and a member of the Commission, I have assisted in this process by introducing an innovative utility oversight triangle model, which CUB has been using to inform our analysis of bureau decisions and operations. We are recommending with particular emphasis that the City Council should be required to respond directly to oversight recommendations, in order to ensure that they don’t get swept under the rug.
We want to make sure that you hear about these draft recommendations and provide input to CUB’s advocacy on the Blue Ribbon Commission. In that spirit, CUB invites you to learn and participate from the comfort of your own home by attending a phone briefing with me, Janice Thompson, and CUB’s Policy Director Jeff Bissonnette!

Jeff Bissonnette will open the briefing with a quick overview of CUB’s watchdog role over Portland public utilities. I will follow with a review of the draft recommendations, and discuss CUB’s request for input. There will be also time for questions and strategizing on how to get involved by testifying at the Commission’s next public hearing on October 16th.
