CUB Representative Named to Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission

Today, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and Commissioner Nick Fish announced the new Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission. Janice Thompson, CUB’s water and wastewater consumer advocate, will serve on the 12 member Commission. You can read about the other 11 members in this report from the Portland Tribune.

The Commission’s charge is to analyze options to improve oversight and accountability of the Portland Water Bureau and the Bureau of Environmental Services. The Commission will focus on streamlining communications and transparency in setting utility rates for water, sewer, and stormwater services.

The Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission will report to the City Council in mid-November after an extensive set of meetings and consultation with a wide range of experts. All Commission meetings will be open to the public and opportunities for public testimony will be provided.

“The Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission’s efforts strengthen and are complementary to CUB’s advocacy for residential ratepayers using the water and wastewater services of the Portland Water Bureau and Bureau of Environmental Services,” said Janice Thompson.

Stay tuned to CUB’s blog over the next few months, as we will be posting notices for the Commission meetings along with other updates! You can follow CUB’s Portland Water & Wastewater news on our website.
