In honor of National Lifeline Awareness Week, we’re highlighting a program that helps Oregon households stay connected to essential phone and internet service. Oregon Lifeline is a federal and state government program that provides qualifying low-income households with access to discounted phone or high-speed internet service through participating providers. With modern life increasingly dependent on these services, Oregon Lifeline is vital in helping low-income families stay connected.
What is Oregon Lifeline?
Oregon Lifeline is a federal and state government program that provides a monthly discount on phone or broadband service for qualifying low-income Oregon households.
You can:
- Receive a discount on your phone bill of up to $19.25 per month;
- Receive a discount on your high-speed internet service of up to $24.25 per month; or
- Receive free cell phone and data service
The program also offers free wireless voice minutes and data through Access Wireless where coverage is available. Oregon residents on federally recognized Tribal lands may qualify for an additional $25 discount each month.
Whether it’s for keeping in touch with family, searching for jobs online, or simply browsing the web, Oregon Lifeline helps you stay connected.
Who Can Benefit?
If you’re having trouble managing the costs of your phone or internet bills and meet certain income guidelines, you may be eligible.
To qualify, Oregonians must receive benefits from select public assistance programs, such as Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Oregon Lifeline is limited to one benefit per household for either discounted or free service.
You may qualify if you receive one of the following benefits:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Veterans or Survivors Pension
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
- Total Household Income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
Oregon residents on tribal lands may qualify if they already receive any of the following tribal-specific programs:
- Tribal General Assistance
- Tribal Head Start
- Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Tribal Food Distribution Program
How to Access Oregon Lifeline
Accessing the Oregon Lifeline program is easy! Here’s what you’ll need to do:
Check Your Eligibility: First, you need to find out if you qualify. You can do this by visiting the Oregon Lifeline website or giving them a call. They will ask questions to determine your eligibility.
Gather Your Documents: You’ll need some paperwork to prove that you qualify. This might include documents showing your income or that you’re part of another assistance program.
Apply: Once you have all your documents ready, you can apply either online, by mail, or over the phone.
Get Connected: After your application is approved, you’ll start receiving the Lifeline benefit. This means a discount on your monthly phone or internet bill, making it more manageable to keep those services running.
Staying in the Program
To keep getting your Lifeline benefit, you’ll need to confirm every year that you still qualify. This is called recertification. The Lifeline program will remind you when it’s time to do this, so you won’t forget.
