Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and City Commissioner Nick Fish welcomed the twelve members of the newly appointed Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission at its first meeting on July 15th. Fish is commissioner-in-charge of the two city departments providing water and wastewater services, the Portland Water Bureau and Bureau of Environmental Services. Both Hales and Fish urged that the Utility Oversight Commission consider multiple recommendations for how the City Council can restore public trust in its management of these two public utilities.
The Utility Oversight Commission has members with private and public utility management experience as well as members from a range of business and public sector interests. The Commission’s recommendations will be presented to the City Council in mid-November. This fast timeline has prompted the Utility Oversight Commission to add a meeting to its schedule.
All meetings of the Utility Oversight Commission are open to the public, and all the materials provided to and produced by the Commission will be available at Commissioner Fish’s website.
There will be two meetings devoted to obtaining public input. CUB is on the Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission, represented by consumer advocate Janice Thompson, and will always be interested in your thoughts and suggestions about Portland’s public utilities.
