CUB Welcomes Portland Consumer Advocate Janice Thompson

The Citizens’ Utility Board of Oregon (CUB) is pleased to announce the hiring of Janice Thompson as our new consumer advocate for Portland water and sewer services.

Thompson comes to CUB after a long career working on democracy reform issues. She has been the director of Democracy Reform Oregon, Common Cause Oregon, and the Midwest Democracy Network. Janice has degrees in biology and education and has taught middle school science with an emphasis on stream and watershed studies. She served on the CUB Board of Governors, leaving four years ago. Janice is nationally recognized as an analyst and policy advocate.

“We are so pleased to get a consumer advocate of Janice’s caliber,” said Bob Jenks, CUB’s executive director. “Portland residents who are water and sewer customers will have someone who will have their backs and make sure that they get value for the money they pay in rates.”

The Portland City Council designated CUB as the residential ratepayer advocate for water and sewer services on January 8, 2014 (You can read more about that decision here.) CUB will be reviewing the budgets and long-term capital expenditures of the Portland Water Bureau and the Bureau of Environmental Services to ensure that ratepayer funds are spent on least cost/least risk investments. Oregon voters created CUB via initiative in 1984 to represent the interests of residential ratepayers across the state.
