On January 8, 2014, the Portland City Council adopted a resolution that designated CUB as the residential ratepayer advocate for water and sewer services in the city. That means that CUB will represent residential customers of the City of Portland’s water and sewer/storm water services by reviewing and analyzing the Portland Water Bureau’s (PWB) and the Bureau of Environmental Services’ (BES) budgets and other materials. Those materials will include, but not be limited to, bureau financial documents, policy proposals, capital investment plans, and other items. CUB thinks that work will allow us to develop analysis in support of budget and policy recommendations that CUB will make to the bureaus and the Portland City Council on behalf of Portland’s residential water and sewer/storm water customers.
Water, sewer, and storm water advocacy is a new program area for CUB. Since Oregonians created CUB in 1984, CUB has saved Oregon gas, electric, and telecom utility customers more than $5.8 billion. CUB’s goal is for the new Water/Sewer advocacy program to be just as successful. CUB is now hiring a Consumer Advocate to focus on water, sewer, and stormwater services, and we expect that the Advocate will play a key role in maintaining and building upon CUB’s successful advocacy record.
The Consumer Advocate position is ideal for an individual with a strong economics and financial analysis background combined with a strong sense of advocacy. Experience with, or proven interest in, the utility industry, water issues, the environment, and/or municipal operations is essential. The Consumer Advocate will work independently and collaboratively with CUB’s regulatory and organizing staff.
Please encourage people you think would be an effective ratepayer advocate to contact CUB and apply.
