Telecommunications Program

Telecommunications

CUB advocates for fair and affordable telecommunications services for people in Oregon. Access to phone and internet services is essential in the modern age.

CUB works to ensure all people in Oregon can access reliable and affordable devices, training, and services to effectively engage in the digital world with robust privacy protections.

Landline Phones

Landline phones, while less common now than in their heyday, are important tools for many people in Oregon. For many Oregonians, landlines are essential for reaching emergency services and loved ones. CUB advocates for fair service prices and for ensuring anyone who wants a landline can access service. We also support policies that maintain access to landline phone services.

Landline service is regulated at the state level, which makes it an easy avenue for CUB’s team to push for better policies for Oregnoinas.

Broadband Internet

Broadband internet is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessary service for many people to access services, connect with their community, and communicate in the digital world. However, there are a lot of places in Oregon where broadband is inaccessible. CUB advocates for state and local policy that expands broadband access and makes internet-connected devices more affordable.

CUB’s advocacy around broadband primarily focuses on expanding built infrastructure. Unfortunately, internet services are largely unregulated in the U.S. so CUB’s ability to address policy issues around this utility is limited.

Cell Phone Service

CUB pushes for policies that help bring down the cost of devices like cell phones, like expanding the Right to Repair. Unfortunately, cellular services are largely unregulated in the U.S. so CUB’s ability to address policy issues around this utility is limited.
