It’s Not Too Late to Tell the Commissioners You Care!

Last night, PGE customers arrived at Jefferson High School in North Portland with signs and prepared speeches to express their opposition to PGE’s proposed rate increase.  Oregon Public Utility Commissioners Savage, Ackerman, and Bloom listened to the diverse group which included PSU and PCC students, representatives from the Western Farm Workers Association and other seasonal worker groups, small business interests, faith groups, and CUB’s own Board Member Fred Heutte. Opponents to the residential rate increase expressed their concern for low-income PGE customers who currently struggle to pay their utility bill, already the highest rate for any utility in the state with more than 5,000 customers. Small business owners feared what an increase would mean for their businesses and community. In a written statement, one small business owner said that the rate increases would hurt him and other owners in three ways: rate increases on their businesses, residential rate increases on their homes, and rate increases that would affect their customers.

You don’t need to be an expert to tell the commission what you think! If you missed last night’s public comment hearing, it’s not too late to tell the commissioners that you care about the case. Share your experience with the commission: Do you struggle to pay your bills on time? Is PGE responsive when you have a problem? Is your service reliable? The commission wants to know!

Written comments can be submitted via snail mail to:

  • 1.Our economy is very slow right now and to raise cost for electricity would be too hard on those still unemployed. Large corporations like PGE must look at more than just profit and should be listening to the public.

  • 2.@Lorraine,

We agree! Please encourage any PGE customers you know who feel the same way to contact the Public Utility Commission via any of the ways mentioned above!
