CUB Policy Center Supporters Gather for Pre-Conference Briefing

On September 10th, CUB staff gathered together at the Widmer Gasthaus in North Portland with a dozen dedicated supporters and friends. Attendees enjoyed socializing over a delicious spread of happy hour hors d’oeuvres, wine, and Widmer’s award-winning beer before hearing a presentation from CUB Executive Director Bob Jenks on “The Flexible Future,” a preview to our forthcoming CUB Policy Conference. This gathering constituted the second briefing of the CPC’s Ursa Major Society program, and it was a rousing success!

CUB founded the Ursa Major Society in 2011 as an avenue through which CUB’s supporters could contribute directly to long-term policy initiatives, like our Transition From Coal project. Unlike CUB membership dues, which support our work on immediate issues in front of the Public Utility Commission and the legislature, Ursa Major contributions help CUB work on issues that are sometimes years away from active consideration in those policy and regulatory arenas.

Becoming a member of the Ursa Major Society is a great way to make a big impact on key energy and utility issues by bolstering CUB’s capacity to focus on building coalitions and public support for policies that protect customers and keep long-term utility costs under control.

Bob’s presentation at the September 10th Ursa Major briefing gave a snapshot of some of the challenges and opportunities currently facing the energy industry. Specifically, he outlined the potential for the use of energy efficiency, renewables, and demand response technology to build utilities that are much more flexible in meeting power needs and protecting consumers. The presentation was a preview of a more in-depth talk that Bob will be giving to kick off CUB’s third annual Policy Conference, taking place on October 25th at the White Stag Block in Old Town Portland. Attendees followed up with a series of probing questions, and engaged a spirited dialogue with Bob and other senior CUB staff about our strategy for making our vision an executable and sustainable reality. And boy, did it ever energize us for the work that lies ahead!
