Now Available: Portland Utility Oversight Commission Draft Recommendations

Last Wednesday, CUB held a phone briefing for Portland water and wastewater customers, during which we outlined our recommendations for providing improved oversight of Portland’s public utilities, and gave an update on our work with the Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend! Participants on the call provided lots of helpful questions and insights.

Our next step is to provide input on draft recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission at a public hearing this Thursday evening, October 16th. The details for the hearing are as follows:

What: Public Hearing on Blue Ribbon Commission Oversight Recommendations
When: 6:00pm – 8:30pm on Thursday, October 16th
Where: Room C on the 2nd floor of the Portland Building, 1120 SW 5th Ave. in downtown Portland

Many more details will be presented to the City Council in the Blue Ribbon Commission’s final report, but this initial summary of draft recommendations is a good start. As CUB’s representative on the Commission, I am particularly committed to highlighting the role that the City Council has played in undermining public trust, and the steps the Council needs to take in order to demonstrate timely and committed implementation of these recommendations.

Want to get involved? It’s easy! I encourage you to call me at (503)227-1984 x 24 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with your comments and suggestions. I am also happy to help you think through testimony that you may want to provide at the October 16th public hearing.

All Blue Ribbon Commission materials are available at the City of Portland’s Blue Ribbon Commission website.

I look forward to hearing your testimony on the 16th or getting your call or email with comments you’d like me to share with the Commission. We will have another update for you on this issue in mid-November, so stay tuned!
