Last week, Stephanie Levine became CUB’s newest team member. As the Community Outreach Specialist, Stephanie will be focusing on CUB’s efforts to reach out to the greater Portland community on policy and consumer issues related to electric vehicles (EVs). As a highly efficient and emissionless alternative to the average internal combustion engine, EVs represent a promising vision for the future of transportation. With so many EV pilot programs taking place in Oregon, Portland has been recognized as a world leader in EV infrastructure and deployment. CUB is excited to stay involved and up-to-date and share information about what an EV future can mean for consumers, renewable energy, and the environment with fellow Oregonians.
Originally from Chicago, Stephanie is a recent graduate of Lewis & Clark College with a degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in English Literature. Attending college in Portland allowed Stephanie to focus on environmental and energy issues both locally and generally. She is excited to have the opportunity to work with CUB and learn firsthand how we can continue to protect utility consumers while we modernize our electrical grid. Towards the beginning of 2013, Stephanie will connect her work on EVs with Portland’s transition from coal to a clean energy mix, focusing on how energy efficiency and smart technology integration intersect with renewable energy developments.
This is the second year that CUB has been selected to sponsor an AmeriCorps position through the Confluence Environmental Center. Confluence sponsors 20 different AmeriCorps positions in low-income communities and communities of color in and around Portland. The AmeriCorps positions at Confluence focus on Energy and Resource Conservation, Healthy Watersheds, and Environmental and Garden Based Programming. Since AmeriCorps’ inception in 1994, over half a million members have contributed more than 705 million hours of national service. In 2009, Congress passed the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which promises to triple AmeriCorps national service members to 250,000 members by 2017. Stephanie’s position at CUB is a product of these expansions. We are proud to participate in the biggest expansion of national service in over a decade and excited to welcome Stephanie to the CUB team!
