Law Students: Summer Clerking and Fall Externing with CUB

Here at CUB, our dedication to education as a component of our staffing strategy through our Education Opportunities program comes with a bittersweet price: at least once a season we have to say goodbye to a talented and hardworking intern, extern or clerk as they finish up their terms with us and make their way on to the next opportunity. This summer, we bade farewell to our summer law clerk Jordan Bailey, who did a good job assisting our Regulatory team with rate cases, researching the legal implications of the EPA’s new 111(d) draft rule for existing coal plants, and much more. Here is what Jordan had to say about his experience with us:

“Prior to my arrival at CUB I had just finished my second year of law school with experience in administrative and environmental law and enthusiasm about expanding my knowledge on how energy law and utility regulation works. I entered law school believing that energy law is a field I may want to practice in the future, so I went into my CUB clerkship hoping to confirm or deny that I was on the right path. After a summer full of complex dockets and busy PUC meeting schedules my experience was exciting to say the least. I can safely say that it affirmed my interest in energy law and utility regulation, and gave me great insight into my career path moving forward.

Under the mentorship of Catriona and Sommer, I was able to do legal research and writing on a variety of complex energy issues, prepare basic PUC filings, and gain experience in real time utility ratemaking by observing rate case and IRP meetings.

Perhaps my favorite project was the opportunity to research the EPA Clean Air Act proposed rule 111(d) and to debate it with my CUB colleagues. This rule could have major implications for the energy industry and ratepayers so it was great to be in on the ground floor researching the possible implications.

As I reflect upon my summer clerking for CUB, I look upon my experience there with gratitude for the expansive learning experience and enthusiasm for what it might mean for my career. The experience has made me appreciate that there are organizations like CUB that advocate for consumers from a position of expertise. I thank CUB for all of the wisdom that they have imparted upon me, and look forward to keeping in touch with them into the future.”

We thank Jordan for his work this summer, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors!

This fall we are happy to welcome Justin Reiter to the fold, as our new Fall Legal Extern. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Justin moved to Portland in January 2014 to complete his final two years at Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark. Prior to law school, Justin had a successful professional career in public policy, working on issues concerning at-risk populations in the private and public sector. The experience of working with vulnerable populations inspired Justin to pursue a legal education and specialize in energy and administrative law. Justin hopes to use his experience with CUB to develop relationships with key stakeholders in the energy and legal community and develop a strong understanding and application of energy law and policy.

Without a professional baseball or football team to support, Justin has become a fan of the Portland Timbers and spends his free time exploring Portland and the surrounding area. Welcome Justin!

If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a CUB law clerk or legal extern please contact CUB’s General Counsel Catriona McCracken directly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). CUB will conduct its next round of interviews in February 2014.
