As Time Goes By

The year was 1984. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was in the 1211 range. The first Apple Macintosh computers went on sale. Ghostbusters, the Karate Kid and Amadeus were all tops at the box office and you could buy a ticket to see any of them for about $2.50.

1984 was also also the year grassroots activists came together to pass a state ballot measure that created the Citizens’ Utility Board of Oregon (CUB), a private nonprofit consumer advocacy organization devoted to fighting for residential ratepayers. Since its inception, CUB has been working hard to convince state regulators and Oregon legislators to support reasonable rates, good service quality, and increased investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Today CUB and its affiliated CUB Policy Center strive to bridge the strengths of our past with the objectives of the future. We operate at the intersection of utility regulation and policy; when CUB gets involved, good long-term results happen. We are an active, thoughtful voice for Oregon citizens, bringing real-world experience to the table from our membership and our passionate, experienced staff. We have worked hard for the last quarter-century, and we intend to keep doing the low-profile, high-impact work that affects every Oregon citizen.

Since its founding, CUB has saved residential ratepayers $4.2 billion (that’s billion with a b) and has been at the center of several major policy landmarks over the years: energy restructuring, creation of the Energy Trust of Oregon, and establishment of the Renewable Energy Standard, just to name a few from the last decade.

CUB will continue to defend residential ratepayers’ interests at the Public Utility Commission and the Legislature. The CUB Policy Center will develop the long-term strategies to deal with the fundamental problem all Oregonians face: keeping rates affordable while confronting climate change. And it will take the same grassroots activism that created CUB to serve ratepayers for the next 25 years and beyond.

As we look into the future, it is important to recognize consumer and environmental victories achieved along the way. In this spirit, CUB is pleased to announce its Anniversary year, celebrating twenty-five years of service to Oregon ratepayers! We invite you to join us in commemorating CUB by attending our Anniversary Dinner on November 14, 2009 at the Portland Hilton. The proceeds from this event will go to support the CUB Policy Center.

If you would like more information or to attend CUB’s 25th Anniversary dinner, please download and complete the reply card, returning it with your check made payable to CUB Policy Center or credit card information to CUB, 610 SW Broadway, Suite 308, Portland, OR 97205. Donations made to the CUB Policy Center are tax-deductible.
