A Year of Growth for CUB’s Ursa Major Society

If you’ve been following the CUB Policy Center over the past couple of years, you’ve heard us talk about the Ursa Major Society. Founded in 2009, the Ursa Major Society is a program of the CUB Policy Center designed to provide an avenue for key supporters to become stakeholders in the Policy Center’s long-term policy development efforts. Much of CUB’s work focuses on the immediate goals of reviewing rate cases and ensuring customers have a voice in regulatory and legislative bodies. But our policy development work – where we begin to work with issues before they become hot topics at the Public Utility Commission or the legislature – is just as important and relies just as much on community support. That’s where the Ursa Major Society comes in.

Now in its fifth year, the Ursa Major program enjoyed a robust year of ongoing connection with our members. August brought the release of our bi-annual Insider Report, a comprehensive review of recent progress in CUB Policy Center programs and upcoming projects and events, including the Transition From Coal project, the CUB Connects program, the 2013 CUB Policy Conference, and more.

This Insider Report also served as an invitation for Ursa Major members to join us for a special fall conference preview event. A dozen core members gathered with CUB staff at the Widmer Gasthaus on September 10th to discuss the upcoming conference and hear Bob Jenks give a preview for flexibility-focused utility operation and planning over the next 30 years. It was a wonderfully successful meeting, replete with engaging conversation and delicious happy hour appetizers and beer provided by Widmer.

As we prepare to bid farewell to 2013, we want to make sure all our readers know how easy it is to become an Ursa Major member for CUB. Contributions of $500 or more can be made in a single payment or in installments throughout the year. We are committed to work with you to maintain your membership in whatever format works best for you! All contributions to the Ursa Major Society are tax-deductible. Learn more about the program and get your membership started by visiting the Ursa Major Society page on our website. Or contact our Development Associate Amelia Lamb at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or (503)227-1984 x19 to discuss and learn more about how you can become a stakeholder in CUB’s policy development efforts.

We appreciate your support of the CUB Policy Center, and wish you a happy holiday season!
