Historic Coal Phase-Out Agreement Makes the News!

Last week was a busy week for CUB staff as we did all we normally do, like file briefs, analyze the economics of utility rate cases and IRPs, and communicate with consumers WHILE ALSO responding to literally dozens of reporters about the HISTORIC Transition from Coal agreement CUB worked on with a diverse group of stakeholders.

The agreement is now in Legislative Counsel for bill language, and representatives from the agreement’s stakeholder groups will testify in front of a joint meeting of the House Energy and Environment and the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committees on this Thursday, January 14 at 2:00pm.

You can see the agenda for this meeting here and watch the hearing live on Thursday by visiting the OR Legislature online (scroll down in the menu titled “Live and Upcoming Meetings” to “House Interim Committee On Energy and Environment 2016-01-14 2:00 PM”; the video link will display as “In Progress – View Event”.)

In the meantime, we thought that you might enjoy reading some of the great press around this issue and (of course) we will start with the articles in which CUB Executive Director Bob Jenks was quoted.

  • 1.It is critical that we get this done sooner. Can you poll ratepayers and shareholders of the electric companies to see if they are willing to sacrifice monetarily to get coal off the grid? Will it be possible to speed up the process if Montana Power's shareholders take a cut in dividends or a loss to stop coal produced energy? Warren Buffett might just kick in money as well.

If a majority of folks want coal out, as you say, will everyone, including the power companies, chip in?

the campaign that must be done to ask these questions will not be accomplished before the bill is voted on this week, but it can be done afterwards, if there is political will.
