On top of 2021’s 13 percent rate increase, NW Natural wants to increase rates for residential customers again by $57 million (12 percent) this year. Members of the public are invited to speak at the upcoming public hearing at 6:00pm on Thursday, March 10.

NW Natural is asking to increase customers’ bills to fund shareholder profits, executive bonuses, and pro-gas advertising. With many customers struggling to make ends meet, Oregonians, especially low-income households, shouldn’t be on the hook for making the wealthy even wealthier.

Included in this 12 percent requested increase for residential customers:

  • $11 million in executive and employee bonuses
  • $1.1 million in profit margin increases
  • Estimated 30 percent increase in advertising costs

Executive and Employee Bonuses: NW Natural is asking to raise rates for residential customers to pay $11 million in bonuses, including $4 million for top executives. Executive bonuses are rewards for making the company more profitable. Shareholders should be held responsible for these costs, not customers.

Increasing Shareholder Profits: NW Natural is asking for more profits annually for its shareholders and wants customers to foot the $1.1 million bill. Since March 2020, the U.S. has seen widening income inequality and economic devastation for many families. This is the second time NW Natural has asked for shareholder payouts since 2020. Now is not the time to force struggling customers to pay for making wealthy shareholders more money.

Advertising to Boost Profits: NW Natural is asking customers to cover an estimated 30 percent increase in advertising. In the past year, NW Natural has promoted its business through misleading advertising using customers’ money. In 2021, NW Natural advertised the benefits of renewable natural gas before this fuel was being delivered to customers. Promoting renewable gas while selling a product that contains little or no renewable gas is misleading. NW Natural’s customers shouldn’t be paying for pro-gas messaging that seeks to benefit the utility’s bottom line.

  • 1.I could not find the form to use to email my comments for this public meeting, as I will be out of state attending a family reunion for the first time in 3 years on the date of the meeting.

I cannot afford another increase in my natural gas bill. I am currently unable to pay for the current month's bill in one payment, and I feel it is unfair to make customers pay for shareholder profits and gas advertising. I am now on a fixed income after having to retire due to a medical condition. Even if this company offers a set monthly average payment monthly, which the utility companies do offer, that does not change the fact that customers should not pay for shareholder profits. The gas company is going to have to do what every citizen is currently doing, apart from the top 1% of the wealthy. They will have to trim their budget. I am currently wearing sweaters in order to keep the heat very low so as to minimize my monthly gas bill. If the price continues to climb up, I simply will not turn on the heat. I'd rather pay for layers of clothing than pay for shareholder profits and advertising.

  • 3.Gas is used for cooking and heating our homes. It is a necessity, not a luxury elective for citizens. As such, NW Natural should not be run like a money making machine.
Portland Metro minimum wage is $14.00. I have a family member living in a memory care senior community. The caregivers and med techs are making $16.25/hr, a $1.00 increase from last year, after I fought for higher wages for them. These hard working people are living in poverty. Last year I found out one of the med techs was homeless. There are thousands of hard working people in the Portland Metro area who are in the same boat; they are financially struggling. Turning a public utility company into a profit making machine is immoral and irresponsible!!

  • 5.A rate increase for executive bonuses, shareholder profits and advertising? Are you out of your freakin' mind? This is obscene! You are putting me this close to going all-electric.
