When asked to write a blog about the holidays on behalf of CUB staff, I turned to Google and typed the first thing that came to mind. My search term “Energy Efficient Holiday Decorations” (the mark of an energy professional: this was the first thing that came to mind) came up with a number of informative websites with great decorating tips for the holidays. We wouldn’t be CUB if we didn’t get you to think about your energy usage amidst the holiday cheer.
I’ve gathered the top 5 tips that I found from various resources. Take a look at this list, and check it twice, to find out if you are energy efficient or not during the holiday season.
Top 5 Energy Saving Holiday Tips:
- Buy LED lights.
- Check for rebates and coupons on LED lights and don’t forget they have a 3 year warranty.
- Limit hourly usage of lights; consider hooking your lights up to an automatic timer.
- Instead of buying more lights, use reflective ornaments and get creative!
- Cook several items at the same time in your oven when possible.
For more information, the US Dept of Energy, has a short list of energy and money-saving tips.
This article from Florida Power and Light goes over 10 tips to being energy efficient during the holidays and even takes it a step further by providing an Energy Efficiency Gift Giving guide.
This article from the California Energy Commission, narrows the list down specifically to the kitchen, outlining ways to be energy efficient while preparing holiday favorites. They also elaborate on energy savings and safety for your holiday decorating.
