What If… More Reasons to Support CUB on #GivingTuesday

There are just a few hours left until #GivingTuesday and so I want to give you just a few more reasons why you should join #OregoniansGive tomorrow, December 1st!
As an Oregonian, as a utility ratepayer, and as the Development and Communications Director for CUB, I sometimes play this little game with myself; I call it “What if…”. It helps me really think about what CUB does and why it matters to me. So, would you humor me for just a moment and play along? Feel free to plug in your own information where it is appropriate.
What if…
- …my average monthly winter electric utility bill of $150 doubled or even tripled without warning…
- …my local community’s sewer system (which costs me, per year, less than 1% of my annual salary) did not exist…
- …basic internet service with reasonable speed was unavailable to me at an affordable price…
- …Oregon (and the world) just continues to get warmer and warmer?
What if…
- …CUB did not have the resources, the staff, or 30+ years of institutional knowledge to understand the intricacies and economic impact of any given utility’s requests for rate increases and infrastructure investments…
- …CUB did not work every day to help policy makers understand the balance between what is a reasonable cost to provide an essential infrastructure service…
- …CUB was not able to help push for and establish options for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources…
- …CUB was not around to show (via economic analysis) that closing deteriorating coal plants is a better deal for consumers than retrofitting those plants to meet new clean-air standards?
This side of the game helps me to see how much CUB Makes a Difference for me and for all of us.
So then I ask how much more could CUB do if…
- …every household in Oregon (1.5 million according to recent census data) joined CUB for as little as $5.00, or perhaps $25, or perhaps $100…
- …CUB (therefore) had the same kind of financial resources to protect Oregonians’ wallets and values that the large utilities and special interests have to protect theirs?
AND THEN that’s when I have to ask…
What if…
• …you join me today (yep - I give to CUB too) by giving to CUB as part of our #OregoniansGive on #GivingTuesday campaign…
• …you visit the website www.oregoniansgive.org to learn about other great organizations that can use your support on #OregoniansGive on #GivingTuesday…
• …you share this blog with your friends on Facebook or Twitter?
After all, as the #OregoniansGive motto says: We’re Oregonians. We’ve got this.
PS: We are doing all kinds of drawings tomorrow for prizes to thank our #OregoniansGive on #GivngTuesday donors. You could be a winner! Check it out at oregoncub.org/membership/givingtuesday.
