Welcoming CUB Contract Attorney Ben Swerdlow

At the end of May, the CUB staff was pleased to welcome our summer 2018 Contract Attorney, Ben Swerdlow.

Ben grew up in Highland Park, Illinois but his chosen home is Oregon. He received a B.A. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Cornell College, in Iowa. After completing an undergrad independent study researching the effects of climate change on coral, and doing work on energy efficiency, he decided to attend Lewis & Clark Law School to help protect the environment. While there he received a certificate in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law, and is currently a member of the Oregon Bar.

In law school doing green energy policy work, and on a climb of Mount St. Helens with Mike Goetz, Ben learned about the work that CUB does to benefit ratepayers and move energy policy forward. Between his interests in green energy technologies, and his interest in environmental justice, Ben concluded that working for CUB would be a meaningful opportunity to make a difference.

When asked his thoughts about Ben’s contributions thus far, Mike had this to say: “We’re excited to have Ben on board, and he’s already been a boon to our regulatory program. Having already earned a law degree and passed the bar exam, his experience has enabled him to hit the ground running. Ben’s research into nationwide grid modernization undertakings has been helpful in the context of SB 978, and his work has already been extremely beneficial in the resource value of solar and community solar proceedings. Beyond that, he has had an opportunity to shadow myself and regulatory staff in numerous settlement conferences.”

In his free time, Ben loves backpacking with his partner Mary and their dog Niko, and is an active member of Portland Mountain Rescue.

Welcome, Ben!
