The EVs Are Coming! The EVs Are Coming!

As a consumer advocate organization, CUB’s first priority is to advocate for Oregon consumers served by investor-owned utilities to make sure that your pocketbooks and your values are being protected. As you know, over the past 33 years we have saved you almost $8 billion; and while we don’t always make a big deal about it, what we have found over those 33 years is that renewables and energy efficiency are the most productive ways to save you money while also creating the sustainable energy future that we all value.

In this blog we are featuring a video in which Bob Jenks (our Executive Director) recently participated.* This short, five-minute video makes the point that: utilities really can make a difference in how quickly Electric Vehicles are adopted; how exciting the EV battery technology is that allows utilities and customers to partner in meeting the challenges of renewable energy storage and reliability; and most importantly, how EV charging and storage can be done in a way that “…makes economic sense as well as sense for the environment”.**

Just as we have discovered over the years, the creators of this video make the point that there are both strong economic savings for consumers and great economic opportunity for business stakeholders when they embrace change through partnership and planning for a sustainable and economically healthy energy future.

As always, you will find Bob speaking truth to those who are in power when he says,

“Climate change isn’t going to be solved by government. It’s going to be solved by government, (and) by people, (and) by institutions like utilities, (and) by regulators. It’s really going to be an all-encompassing thing where we’re all going to have to come together to adopt policies that allow us to live sustainably.”

CUB is passionate about grid diversification and how EVs can (and will if we begin effecting change right now) be a great benefit to our energy system; allowing utilities to thrive, protecting consumer pocketbooks, and shielding the environment. In fact, we have a whole panel on this issue at our seventh Annual CUB Policy Conference, Utility Regulation 2.0, to be held at the downtown Portland Hilton on Friday, October 13 – Benefit Or Burden: EV Peak Load And Flexibility.

So check out this video and learn about the EV revolution. Mindy Lubber of Ceres** says, “It’s happening. I think it is irresistible. I think it’s unstoppable.”
