Summers in Oregon are getting hotter, and it’s important to stay cool to keep comfortable and safe. Here are some easy tips to help you beat the heat:
Stay Hydrated
One of the most important things you can do is drink plenty of water. When it’s hot outside, your body loses water faster. Make sure you have a bottle of water with you and take sips throughout the day. Avoid drinks with caffeine or lots of sugar, as they can make you more dehydrated.
Use Fans and Air Conditioning Wisely
Fans and air conditioning can make a big difference in keeping your home cool. Here’s how to use them efficiently:
- Ceiling Fans: If you have one, set your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise to create a cool breeze.
- Air Conditioning: Set your AC to a comfortable temperature, around 78 degrees when you’re home and higher when you’re away. This saves energy and keeps you cool.
- Window Fans: Use window fans to blow hot air out and bring cool air in, especially at night when temperatures drop.
Block the Sun
Keeping the sun out of your home can help it stay cooler. Here are some tips:
- Curtains and Blinds: Close curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun.
- Window Reflectors: Use reflective window film or shades to bounce sunlight away from your windows.
- Trees and Plants: Plant trees or large shrubs around your home to provide natural shade.
Cool Down at Night
Nighttime can be a great time to cool your home naturally. Open windows and use fans to create a cross breeze that lets cool air in and pushes hot air out. If it’s safe, keep windows open at night and close them in the morning to trap the cool air inside.
Use Heat-Producing Appliances Less Often
Appliances like ovens, stoves, and even some lights can heat up your home. Try these alternatives:
- Microwave and Toaster Oven: Use these smaller appliances instead of your oven to cook meals.
- Grill Outside: Take your cooking outside by using a grill. It keeps the heat out of your kitchen and can make cooking a fun summer activity.
- Energy-Efficient Lighting: Switch to LED bulbs, which produce less heat and use less energy.
Dress for the Weather
What you wear can also help you stay cool. Choose light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton. Hats and sunglasses can also protect you from the sun when you’re outside.
Take Cool Showers
A quick cool shower can lower your body temperature and make you feel refreshed. You can also soak your feet in cool water or use a damp washcloth on your neck and wrists to cool down.
Visit Cool Places
If your home is too hot, find cool places to spend time. Libraries, splash pads, shopping malls, cooling centers, and community centers often have air conditioning and can provide a nice break from the heat.
By following these tips, you can stay cool and comfortable during Oregon’s hot summer months. Staying hydrated and keeping your home cool is key to enjoying the summer safely.
