We are now officially counting down the last few days before the sixth annual CUB Policy Conference, The Future Starts Now, taking place at the Downtown Portland Hilton on Friday October 14. Our Early Bird deadline has passed, and today (Tuesday, October 11) is the last day to register online for the conference! (Same-day registration will be available, beginning at 7:15am on Friday.)
To give readers a sense of the discussions that will take place, we are previewing each of our breakout sessions here on the CUB blog. Today’s update focuses on the afternoon session topic Taking It To The Streets: At the Intersection Of Energy And Transportation.
The nexus between our transportation and energy sectors is perhaps now more important than it has ever been—both here in Oregon and beyond. For the first time since the 1970s, carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation sector are set to pass those from the energy sector in the U.S. Oregon’s landmark Clean Electricity & Coal Transition plan, passed earlier this year, contains a provision that directs Oregon’s investor-owned electric utilities to look into programs to accelerate transportation electrification in the state. Strides are being made in technologies to integrate compressed natural gas and renewable natural gas as alternative fuels to reduce emissions and airborne particulate matter. We are exploring new, innovative solutions to offer increased transportation availability to low-income communities while helping to protect vulnerable populations from harmful emissions.
With a diverse array of participants, this panel will delve into establishing a roadmap toward a restructured transportation-sector landscape. How can we achieve our goals in advancing clean and responsible transportation while leveraging our assets to best serve all members of our community? This panel is a great starting point to explore these issues.
Joining me for what should be a robust and important discourse are Jeff Allen – Executive Director of Drive Oregon; Bill Edmonds – Director, Environmental Policy & Sustainability at NW Natural; Jana Gastellum – Program Director, Climate at Oregon Environmental Coalition; Vivian Satterfield – Deputy Director of OPAL Environmental Justice; and Brian Spak – Manager, Customer Energy Solutions at Portland General Electric.
Again, if you wish to register in advance online, today is the last day to do so! Register here, and follow #CUBCon16 on Twitter for conference updates and live conversation during the event. See you there!
