A big change is coming in 2022 for cellular networks. This year, all major cell carriers will be shutting down their 3G networks. This marks a big change for customers with older phones and connected devices. Read on to see when this switch will happen, how it will affect you, and what you need to do to prepare.
The End of 3G Networks
Throughout this year, cell carriers will be shutting down their 3G networks. Companies are ending these older networks to make room for new, more advanced networks. 3G technology has been used for decades. In 2010, newer 4G LTE technologies were introduced. Now, many mobile providers are switching to 5G technology, which is making 3G obsolete.
Major carriers have announced plans to shut down 3G networks this year on their own timelines:
- AT&T: February 2022
- Verizon: December 31, 2022
- Sprint (now owned by T-Mobile): March 31, 2022
- T-Mobile: July 1, 2022
Even if your cell carrier isn’t listed here, you will still likely be impacted by the shutdown of 3G networks. Many smaller carriers use the networks of larger carriers, so their 3G services will also end. Cricket, Boost, and many Lifeline carriers will be impacted by these network shutdowns.
If you are unsure whether your service will be affected, contact your cell carrier’s customer service and ask what their plan is for their 3G network.
Changes for Customers
With the end of 3G networks, devices still using this older technology will no longer be connected to cell service. This includes 911, making cellular calls, texting, and connecting to the internet over cellular networks.
This change will impact many customers’ devices, including:
- 3G mobile phones
- Older 4G mobile phones without LTE
- Other cell-connected devices using 3G such as medical devices, home security, tablets, smart watches, etc.
If you have a device that was made before 2010, it is likely that your device will need to be replaced. Check with your carrier if you are unsure when your device was made.
How to Prepare for 3G Network Shutdowns
For those still using 3G, you will need to replace your cell phone or other device with a newer model. Many carriers are offering upgrades for customers. Please note that these upgrades may include costs and may not be available to everyone.
