My eclectic work history includes a stint as a middle school science teacher, so my favorite recent protest sign read: “What do we want? Evidence based science! When we want it? After peer review!”
I know that my middle school science students didn’t always appreciate my assertion that just because they weren’t going to become scientists, they still needed scientific literacy skills to become well informed citizens. Given recent political attacks on scientists and scientific findings, that assertion seems even timelier today.
If you agree that science is important, you can join others this Saturday – Earth Day – at Portland’s March for Science.
An informal group of scientists and science supporters, described in this Oregonian article, have banded together to organize a Portland entry in the national March for Science movement.
The rally begins at 10:00am in Tom McCall Waterfront Park by the Morrison Bridge, and speakers include Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici. The march begins at 11:00am and you can find route details here. The march will return to Waterfront Park at 12:30pm and there will be bands and informational booths until festivities wrap up at 3:00.
Science March PDX has three core principles:
- Science is for the common good
- Support for cutting edge science education
- Science should be transparent and inclusive
Their mission statement includes the following:
People who value science have remained silent for far too long in the face of policies that ignore scientific evidence and endanger both human life and the future of our world. New policies threaten to further restrict scientists’ ability to research and communicate their findings. We face a possible future where people not only ignore scientific evidence, but seek to eliminate it entirely. Staying silent is a luxury that we can no longer afford. We must stand together and support science.
