Oregon homes soon will be able to access rebates for energy upgrades with the Home Energy Rebate Program. These rebates will help Oregonians move away from fossil fuels and make their homes more energy efficient. The ultimate goal is to make upgrades that will lower utility bills, improve home comfort, promote resilience, and reduce indoor and outdoor air pollution.
New Home Energy Rebates Coming to Oregon
The Department of Energy (DOE) has taken a significant step towards advancing clean energy initiatives with the release of guidance for the Home Energy Rebates Program. This program aims to distribute $8.5 billion in grants to states for energy upgrade programs:
- $4.3 billion in grants to states for home energy upgrades (Home Efficiency Rebates)
- $4.5 billion in grants to states and tribes for high-efficiency home appliances (Home Electrification Rebates)
- $200 million for state-based home energy efficiency contractor training grants (State Energy Program)
The Home Energy Rebates program is designed to help households save money on energy bills, improve energy efficiency, reduce air pollution, and create workforce training programs. Oregon is eligible for $113 million in grants from the DOE.
Benefits of Home Energy Efficiency
With this program, you can get money back when you make upgrades to your home. So, if you install energy-efficient appliances, like smart thermostats or heat pumps, you can save on these investments. Making these upgrades also help you save on your energy bills.
The program is all about making homes more energy efficient, safe, and comfortable for less money on your bills.
Reduced Utility Bills: Rebates help lower the upfront cost of energy upgrades. More energy-efficient homes use less energy, saving you money in the long run.
Comfortable and Energy-Safe Homes: More energy efficiency also means efficient heating and cooling. These upgrades will help in keeping people safe and comfortable during extreme temperatures.
Support for Low-Income Households
This program works to ensure that low-income households are supported. The DOE is working to ensure a significant portion of the funding is going towards low-income homes. This will make energy-efficient appliances more affordable to the people who need them most. Many of the households who cannot afford energy upgrades are also those who have the hardest time affording their energy bills.
A Step Toward the Clean Energy Transition
Overall, all Oregonians benefit from this funding. As we move away from fossil fuels, we must find creative ways to reduce our energy use. By making energy-efficient more accessible, the Home Energy Rebates Program will help Oregon meet its energy and climate goals.
The positive impacts of the Home Energy Rebates Program are projected to be significant. It will enhance the liveability and energy affordability of homes throughout Oregon. In fact, DOE estimates consumers could save up to $1 billion annually in energy costs.
