Every year, the Oregon Public Utility Commission sets natural gas prices based on the expected cost of natural gas for the upcoming year. This year, the projected gas price is expected to decrease. This will impact residential customers of all three Oregon natural gas utilities (NW Natural, Avista, and Cascade). The chart below visualizes the price fluctuations of natural gas. The shaded region is current year. The dotted line represents the ten year average price of natural gas. In the past year, the price of natural gas was below the ten year average.

Oregon Gas utilities are projecting reduced gas costs over the next year, which will result in a rate reduction for residential customers. Below is a list of impacts of this adjustment on residential natural gas rates.
Change in Residential Rates for Natural Gas Customers:
Northwest Natural: 6.4% decrease
Avista: 1.8% decrease
Cascade: 5.2% decrease
This rate change is due to an annual Purchased Gas Adjustment, which is meant to ensure that customers only pay the actual natural gas costs. Meteorologists expect this winter to be colder than average. This reduction in Natural Gas will definitely help Oregonians heat their homes.
