Natural Gas Rates Going Down Across Oregon

Oregon’s three natural gas utilities have all announced significant rate decreases for residential customers this winter. NW Natural, the largest natural gas company in Oregon, plans on decreasing rates for residential customers by 6.2 percent. Avista Utilities, which serves customers in Southern Oregon, will decrease rates by 8.3 percent; Cascade Natural Gas, which serves central Oregon, will decrease rates by 2.5 percent.

The cause of these rate decreases is primarily increased natural gas supply. In the past year, the cost of natural gas has decreased and utilities are passing this reduction in the commodity cost on to customers. Current gas forecasts expect that prices will remain neutral or flat this upcoming winter, taking into account weather, economic conditions, customer demand, and natural gas production.

Residential customers primarily use natural gas for heating. This decrease follows a long trend of decreasing natural gas commodity prices. This general price decrease is welcome for Oregonian heating bills this upcoming winter.
