It’s Board Election Time at CUB!

As a nonprofit that was founded through a ballot initiative, CUB is in a fairly unique position when it comes to the structure of our governing board. Much of the language that forms CUB’s bylaws was spelled out in the bill that created CUB. This language includes CUB’s board election process, and dictates that winter 2014/15 is an election year!

Members of CUB’s Board of Governors are elected by congressional district to 4-year terms. Anyone running for the board must run for the district seat that is located in the congressional district in which they live.

This year’s election process is well underway! We have two seats currently up for election** – both seats were vacated early, in summer 2014, and then filled by board appointment. The two newly appointed members are now running for full 4-year terms. If elected, they will serve through the end of 2018. Read on for their bios and candidate statements, and for those of you in Districts 1 and 5, watch for a ballot insert in your next CUB newsletter!

Rob Brading
District 1 - Seat 1: Rob Brading

My name is Rob Brading and I am running for election for CUB’s Board of Governors in District 1. I was appointed to the board earlier this fall to fill out a vacancy and am now asking for your vote as a fellow CUB member.

I have been the Chief Executive Officer of Metroeast Community Media since 1992 as part of a long career devoted to giving people the skills to actively and effectively participate in a democratic society. In addition to helping to build democracy through media, my work at Metroeast has also centered on advocating for progressive telecommunications policy at the state and federal level.

My hope for my time on the CUB Board is to bring my experience on telecommunications issues to the organization to extend that part of CUB’s mission. I also have extensive experience in organizational development and I want to bring that experience to bear as CUB continues to grow.

I have been a long-time admirer of CUB’s work and I’m happy to have the opportunity to serve on the CUB Board to help continue its long record of success and results for utility consumers. I ask for your vote to start a full term as a Board of Governors member elected by CUB members. Thank you.

Carla Bird
District 5 - Seat 3: Carla Bird

My name is Carla Bird and I am asking for your vote to the Citizens’ Utility Board of Oregon’s Board of Governors. I have been involved in complex utility issues since the mid-1990s and was very aware of CUB’s work as a staff member at the Oregon Public Utility Commission for 10 years through 2012. CUB is very well-respected in both the regulatory and policy environment and I’m looking forward to continuing my utility involvement through CUB.

I graduated in 1983 from Trend College of Business with an Associate’s degree in Accounting. I began my career as a Real Estate Sales Associate and then as a Real Estate Appraiser’s Assistant. I began working for State Government initially as a Senior Industrial/Utility Appraiser for the Department of Revenue for 8 years prior to joining the Public Utility Commission as a Senior Utility Analyst. After a brief stint away from state government, I’m back working at the Oregon Department of Human Services as a Senior Fiscal Analyst. I have worked for nearly 20 years for State Government.

During my time as a Senior Analyst for the Oregon Public Utility Commission, I often worked directly with CUB and its Staff. CUB does great work in making sure that energy is affordable for all Oregonians and my current job underscores how important that is. I’m also looking forward to using my financial skills to help CUB continue in making sure that all its resources are used effectively in doing solid work on behalf of ratepayers.

Thank you for your consideration and I would appreciate your vote.

** The members of the CUB Board of Governors are designated by the CUB law (ORS 774) to act as the CUB board of directors as well as the CUB Policy Center Board of Directors.
