Farewell and Good Luck, Andrew

CUB bids a fond farewell this month to Database Assistant, Andrew Rod, as he’s accepted a well-deserved summer internship after completing his double major in Business and Economics at Portland State University.
CUB hired Andrew at the tail end of summer 2018 to primarily manage our member-relationship database, but also to handle numerous other activities regarding member outreach. The Database Assistant role was entirely new to CUB. Prior to Andrew, CUB staff (most recently me) had paired database oversight and membership outreach with other responsibilities.
This “wearing many hats” dynamic should come as no surprise to anyone who’s worked for a nonprofit organization. But as CUB endeavors to continually focus and strengthen our staffing capacity, we decided to hire someone whose primary emphasis would be member-data management to better inform our outreach.
I can only imagine that learning an entirely new database system while in school full time and working a separate part-time job was challenging. Though you would never know it from observing Andrew and the impressive quality and consistency of his work. From day one, he made it his mission not only to master CUB’s membership outreach systems, but also to understand CUB’s unique role in Oregon and what the existence of an independent utility customer advocate means for Oregonians.
For me, supervising Andrew has been both a pleasure and, frankly, quite easy. Andrew has that rare combination of self-motivation, quick learning, and a keen ability to know just when and how to ask questions. He fully “owns” his work and, in roughly 10 months employed at CUB, never once failed to do the right thing.
In fact, during a large spell of Andrew’s tenure at CUB, particularly this past winter and spring, I commuted to and from Salem for legislative work. This meant generally long days and not much time to check in on Andrew. During this time, he excelled. CUB will surely miss Andrew. We wish him the very best and feel confident in his future success.
