Special CUB Policy Conference Preview: Generation for a New Generation

As you may already know, CUB’s 5th annual policy conference, Utility 2025 will focus on what the utility of the future could look like. It will feature a number of topics, including the Clean Power Plan, the future role of natural gas, reliability, renewables, and more. The panel I will be hosting is called “Distribute This: Generation for a New Generation.” As you might guess, the main topic will revolve around distributed generation and its future role in the utility industry. In case you don’t know, distributed generation is generally any power that is generated close to the source of consumption. This is separate from traditional base load power plants—large, centralized power plants that generate power far away from the consumer. Generally, distributed generation is less centralized and site specific. One example of distributed generation is rooftop solar, whereby individual residents generate power at the source of consumption!

As more and more distributed generation comes online, how will this impact the traditional utility model? What might the utility of the future look like as it interacts with more consumer-operated generation? Will this change the role of the utility? Come to our conference to hear some regional experts discuss these issues and offer valuable insight for the Utility of 2025:
