On June 15th, we announced the launch of a summer photo contest, celebrating the theme “Energy in the Northwest” and encouraging our readers to engage with CUB through visual storytelling and interaction with nature. Five short weeks later, we had a strong supply of photos depicting everything from solar panels to camping trips to towering mountains and waterfalls. Photos were judged by a three-person panel on the CUB staff on the basis of criteria stated at the launch of the contest: “The photo subject and composition must be relevant to the theme, i.e. original photos that represent the values of Oregon’s utility customers, our connection to the environment, and our natural energy resources.”
It was a difficult decision with so many high-quality images to choose from. But in the end, three photos were selected that we felt best represent our relationship in the Pacific Northwest to our environment, natural resources, and the energy that sustains us. Here they are - our contest winners!
1st place - winner of $150 REI gift card:
“A Vanishing Point for Carbon Emissions”, taken at Baldock Solar Station near Wilsonville, OR
Photographer: Pete Lee
2nd place - winner of $75 REI gift card:
“Exalted Warrior”, taken at White River Falls State Park
Photographer: Kyle Carnes
3rd place - winner of $50 REI gift card:
“Icy Waterfall”, taken at Paulina Falls, Bend, OR
Photographer: Sherrie Pelsma
Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all our contestants for participating! CUB will be featuring each of the winning images in one or more future blog posts, as well as in our upcoming summer newsletter Bear Facts (in black & white). Additionally, we may use any of the submitted photos in future publications, so keep your eyes out (and stay tuned for news of our 2nd annual photo contest in summer 2016!)
