CUB Proudly Supports Energy Efficiency Day 2018

Today, October 5 2018, is the third annual Energy Efficiency Day. CUB, of course, is a tireless energy efficiency advocate and proudly supports #EEDay2018, a growing movement of advocacy organizations, government and non-governmental agencies, energy utilities, and individuals across the US.

The goal of Energy Efficiency Day is to highlight the generous benefits of energy efficiency by organizing under a common message. To meet climate change goals, build and maintain a clean energy economy, improve public health outcomes, and save folks money, we as a country and world must utilize all available resources to realize the benefits of energy efficiency.

As an advocate for residential utility consumers, CUB is particularly supportive of everyday education for individuals wanting to lower their energy use. CUB has also been an integral player behind important public policies to facilitate savings for the benefit of all customer classes and the energy system as a whole. Our work in helping to establish the Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO) in 2002 is a prime example. An independent nonprofit, ETO expertly facilitates energy efficiency upgrades and clean energy improvements for customers of Oregon’s largest investor owned utilities.

Beyond tips for renters and homeowners, and our strong backing of the ETO, we recognize a need to think more boldly. For instance, important energy efficiency gains are too often overlooked at both the grid and community level. With this in mind, CUB Executive Director Bob Jenks will moderate a panel discussion at CUB’s eighth annual Policy Conference this October 19 on the topic of grid-level energy efficiency. On the flipside – recognizing the intersection of energy work, environmental justice, and social equity – CUB Advocacy Director Janice Thompson will moderate a separate panel on community decarbonization, highlighting the work of Living Cully, a nonprofit collaboration among Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East, Hacienda Community Development Corporation, Native American Youth and Family Center, and Verde.

To stay engaged with Energy Efficiency Day, you can join in on a twitter chat from 1:00 – 2:00pm (EST), which will be hosted by Environment America. Use #SaveEnergyChat, #EEDay2018, or #EnergyEfficiency and check out @NEEA for fun and useful energy efficiency content.
