CUB Prepares for Confronting Carbon: Fossil Fuels vs. Renewables

As you may already know, CUB’s 2014 Policy Conference will feature a number of topics discussing the complications surrounding mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. One of the challenges currently facing utilities, regulators, and industry stakeholders involves the role of baseload fossil fuels in the energy resource mix. Baseload fossil fuels are the most common resource in most parts of the country, but here in the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed to also have a sizeable hydroelectric resource to supply energy to the region, and also to have wind, solar, energy efficiency, and other resources as well. Transitioning to an even lower-carbon future in Oregon will come with its own set of challenges, and I will be hosting a panel at the CUB Policy Conference that will explore the dynamics of what a carbon-free energy generation mix might look like.

It will be an exciting discussion with a number of engaging panelists:

  • Megan Decker: Chief Counsel at Renewable Northwest. Megan provides advice on legislative policy, manages advocacy on voluntary green power market issues, and assists with renewable energy siting policy and legal matters.
  • Cathy L. Ehli: Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Bonneville Power Administration. Cathy is responsible for developing agency strategy on critical regional and national issues, including climate change, renewable resource integration, regional transmission planning, and market design.
  • Sara Patton: Executive Director of NW Energy Coalition. The Coalition works for a clean and affordable energy future through energy efficiency, consumer protection, clean renewable energy resources and restoration of fish and wildlife.
  • Brett Sims: Director of Origination, Structuring & Resource Strategy at Portland General Electric. Brett is responsible for developing strategic plans for meeting PGE’s mid and long-term energy supply requirements, as well as securing new electric generation resources to meet those needs.

There are numerous potential avenues to achieve a low carbon future, and we hope that you will join us for an afternoon of exciting dialogue as we explore these and other issues.
