Our energy systems are built for one purpose: providing energy to people. With the rollout of climate regulation, we are also moving toward utilities that are safe, healthy, and beneficial to our planet. But how can we maintain our systems to work for people who use them?
At CUB’s 14th annual policy conference, Energy Policy for People & Planet, we’re striving to answer these questions and so much more! Join us for a day of discussion, networking, and sharing diverse perspectives.

Data From the People for the People: Considerations of Customer Data and AI
Relentless computing advancements have created exponentially larger and more accurate, granular datasets. Amid this massive influx, a lot of data is specifically centered on individuals or groups of people. Institutions, including utilities, are perpetually collecting info about the energy patterns and preferences of households. Societal scale data provides even more insight, such as factors of affordability for different households. This data has a lot of promise and could help guide utility policy that reflects people’s lived experiences.
How can customers benefit from people-centered data? How can we use this data to address inequities, like energy burden? How can data surrounding income inequality inform utility policy? Can this aggregated data be used in beneficial or even harmful ways? What ethical guidelines, such as protecting customer privacy, should govern the use of people-centric data and AI in the utilities sector? How can the use of data advance affordability, reliability, and clean energy goals?
