CUB is seeking a Law Clerk to assist our Regulatory staff throughout the summer of 2016 in its ongoing work on behalf of utility customers in the state of Oregon.
CUB’s Law Clerk program was created in 2009 to connect legal students with the expertise and experience of working in energy and telecom law and utility regulation. In a working environment where schedules and issues can evolve rapidly, CUB works hard to include its law clerks in all aspects of our daily work of energy law, and should be willing to roll up their sleeves and dig right in. CUB’s law clerk program is designed to provide law students with hands on experience related to utility (gas, electric and telecom) law and regulation. Each law clerk is supervised by CUB’s General Counsel and works closely with CUB’s Staff Attorney and Utility Analysts.
During each CUB law clerkship, law clerks are provided with a wide variety of experiences including, but not limited to: Attendance at Public Utility Commission hearings and other proceedings, Attendance at Oregon State Legislative hearings (when in session), Attendance at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) hearings and other proceedings (occasional), Utility law research, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) research, Legislative history research, Drafting of discovery requests (data requests), motions, proposed rule or legislative changes, and Regular attendance at meetings with Oregon’s investor owned utilities. Through these hearings and other proceedings CUB’s law clerks are introduced to practicing energy bar attorneys, utility analysts and management staff, state representatives, senators, employees of other energy and environmental non-profits, and other professionals in the industry.
Qualifications:
Law students, wishing to become CUB law clerks, should have a clear interest in the field of energy law, and should be willing to roll up their sleeves and dig right in. At CUB, enthusiasm is essential, and a hands-on experience is a promise.
This is a paid position, and dates are flexible within the summer months of 2016.
