Climate Change Legislation in Salem

Establishing a price on carbon has emerged as a priority for Governor Kate Brown and chairs of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources and House Energy and Environment Committees. Indeed, those committees are holding a series of joint meetings to discuss that very topic. Initial hearings focused on presentations about numerous reports and studies.

The following links contain a wealth of information about resources that have been presented to legislators:

Five bills have been introduced, and the Statesman Journal described the initial public hearing as a “marathon session”. Many individuals offered testimony, which on the whole was more supportive than oppositional. Supporting testimony included comments from a number of young people, such as Portland 7th grader Jeremy Clark. Senator Michael Dembrow, Chair of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, promised a thorough discussion but told the Statesman Journal: “By the time we finish this session, we will have settled on a path… and commit to moving forward on that path.”

Joint hearings of the House and Senate committees to discuss climate change legislation will continue on Tuesday evenings. You can watch hearings online. Learn more and search for live and archived video at:
