2023 CUB Energy Policy Conference

Building(s) for an Equitable Energy Future will explore how construction, energy systems, and local climate policies overlap. We will be diving into who is informing clean energy policies and the community impacts of these decisions. We will make connections between community advocates, the energy industry, the buildings industry, and policymakers. And we will bring in vital perspectives from communities on the front lines of climate change in the Pacific Northwest.

Morning Breakout Panels

Breaking Barriers, Building Benefits: Prioritizing Frontline Communities
As we transition our energy systems, many communities face major barriers to accessing energy. Buildings (and their energy systems) are just one place where these barriers are created. We need to work toward a future where everyone can access affordable energy, efficient appliances, and healthy homes. This panel will unpack barriers faced by Oregon communities and look toward solutions that prioritize their needs.

How can we use the energy transition to break down barriers for low-income communities? How do housing and energy needs overlap for new opportunities for strengthening communities and reducing energy burdens? How can we meet the needs of all types of homes (rentals, manufactured homes, multi-family housing)?

Moderator: Will Gehrke

On the House: Leveraging Funding Opportunities for Local Impact
There is an unprecedented amount of money for clean energy and energy efficiency investments for individuals, local governments, utilities, and companies. From the Inflation Reduction Act to the newly passed Oregon Climate Budget, we have a lot of opportunities to make big local impacts. This panel will discuss federal and state funding options, Oregon-specific plans, and how to ensure equitable rollouts of these programs.

How is Oregon preparing to make as many of these funds as accessible as possible? How can we use these funds to bring maximum benefit to all Oregonians? How can we prioritize communities with the greatest need for resources getting to the front of the line? How can we ensure funds are equitably distributed?
