We’re just a few weeks away from the 13th Annual CUB Energy Policy Conference! CUB is proud to announce this year’s afternoon breakout panels.
This year’s conference will be October 6 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at Left Bank Annex in Portland, Oregon.
2023 CUB Energy Policy Conference
Building(s) for an Equitable Energy Future will explore how construction, energy systems, and local climate policies overlap. We will be diving into who is informing clean energy policies and the community impacts of these decisions. We will make connections between community advocates, the energy industry, the buildings industry, and policymakers. And we will bring in vital perspectives from communities on the front lines of climate change in the Pacific Northwest.
Afternoon Breakout Panels
Local Governments Take the Lead
Cities and counties across Oregon have taken bold steps over the past few years to address climate change. Local governments control building permits, energy standards, zoning, and many other programs and policies. And many are pursuing their own climate action plans. Decisions made in these arenas have a significant impact on what is built and how our energy is used. This panel will discuss how local communities are taking the lead on the policies, and the tools they are using, that are moving us to the clean energy future.
How are cities like Eugene, Milwaukie, Ashland, and others handling the shift away from fossil fuels? What are local building policies doing to improve livability and reduce energy burden? How does change at the local level help equitably meet community needs? What challenges are local governments facing in achieving their climate action goals and what tools are at their disposal?
Moderator: Mike Goetz
Nailed It!: Creating Equitable Housing for the Clean Energy Future
Oregon is facing two dire crises: access to affordable housing and climate change. Energy-efficient housing lies at the intersection of these two crises. As we build tens of thousands of new homes, including single and multi-family units, we must weigh the climate and cost impacts of how we energize these homes. By considering energy efficiency from the start, we can minimize the climate impact of housing development at the lowest overall cost. This panel will discuss the overlap between housing affordability, energy affordability, and efficiency as we build a clean energy future.
How do we balance energy efficiency with affordability for housing? What must we consider in balancing the cost of the building and the cost of living in the building? What is the role of energy burden in housing affordability? How can trade and labor organizations support and be supported by the clean energy transition? How can an equitable energy transition work toward solving these crises?
