2020 CUB Conference Preview: Moving Forward: Beyond the Status Quo

CUB is hosting our tenth annual policy conference, Finding Hope: Improving Our Energy Systems in the Age of COVID-19 on October 16 from 9:30am – 2:40pm. Registration will remain open until October 15 at 5pm. In today’s blog, we are excited to preview the fourth panel of the day, Moving Forward: Beyond the Status Quo.

The prior panel’s focus on implementation of Governor Brown’s greenhouse gas reduction Executive Order 20-04 sets the stage for discussion around moving beyond the pre-COVID-19 energy policy status quo. The Moving Forward panel also builds on the discussion during the conference’s second morning panel that will emphasize once-in-a-century policy solutions to the historic COVID-19 crisis.

The pandemic’s trajectory remains uncertain, but we know that negative economic impacts will linger and present a significant challenge to rebuilding a more robust and fair economy, as well as achieving an equitable and decarbonized energy system. This year’s devastating wildfires only add to this challenge, especially since they disproportionately affected many of the communities already hit hard by COVID-19. Such extreme wildfire events are likely to become more frequent due to climate change.

At the same time, we must not view social equity, energy affordability, and accelerated decarbonization as conflicting goals. How can we move beyond the pre-COVID-19 status quo and emerge from the pandemic with a more equitable, clean, efficient, customer friendly, and resilient energy system?

We look forward to a robust discussion between three expert panelists who are well positioned to discuss local, state, and national opportunities and challenges for Moving Forward: Beyond the Status Quo:

  • Sam Baraso - Program Manager, Portland Clean Energy Fund, Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability
  • Senator Jeff Golden - District 3 - Ashland, Oregon Legislative Assembly
  • Pam Kiely - Senior Director of Regulatory Strategy, US Climate, Environmental Defense Fund

CUB Economist, Sudeshna Pal will moderate this panel with the help of Advocacy and Development Manager, Sam Pastrick. We look forward to the conversation and hope you can join us!
