2016 CUB Policy Conference: The Future Starts Now

The 2016 CUB Policy Conference has been on the books for months now for Friday, October 14th, at the Downtown Portland Hilton. Our staff deliberated carefully on this year’s theme, meeting with a number of energy stakeholders and long-time supporters to tease out the issues that are occupying their attention.
Many ideas were thrown around, but one big concept consistently stuck to the wall, and will form the theme of our sixth annual conference: The Future Starts Now.
Futurists once dreamed that the 21st Century would bring great technological advances, and while we may not have flying cars, we do live in an age of 3D printers that make lungs, phones that have face to face capacity, and AIs that beat the best human chess players. Like the rest of the world, the energy industry is undergoing futuristic shifts as well: transitioning off coal, increasing renewables standards, electric/natural gas fueled vehicles, and the need for energy storage are no longer speculative - they’re here. So while the CUB conference usually looks at what is next in energy, we find that this year, being futuristic is…passé. Because whether or not we are ready: The Future Starts Now.
The sixth annual CUB Policy Conference will once again feature an opening panel, “The View From the Top” in which CEOs of Northwest utilities, along with Bob Jenks, will discuss the high-level challenges and opportunities they are grappling with in the energy sector today. The rest of the day will feature six breakout sessions on wide-ranging topics, soon to be announced.
The 2016 conference will also feature the inaugural CUB Consumer Champion Award, to be given at the end of the day with a reception following. (Watch for more details and Honoree announcement in mid-summer.)
